Dutch KSA Allocates €5M to New Gambling Harm Prevention Projects Across Netherlands

The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch gambling regulator, has announced a fresh allocation of funds through its Addiction Prevention Fund to combat problem gambling in the Netherlands. With 20% of the Dutch population currently at moderate to high risk of harmful gambling behavior, the new grants aim to strengthen treatment and prevention efforts nationwide.

The latest round of funding supports five new initiatives. The Anonymous Gamblers Foundation (AGOG) will receive funds to train new counselors and explore digital counseling options for regions where in-person meetings are impractical. This expansion aims to reach more individuals struggling with compulsive gambling across the country.

The Dutch Association for Psychiatry (NVvP) will develop specialized guidelines for treating gambling disorders, building upon its existing recommendations for mental health professionals. This initiative seeks to integrate problem gambling treatment more effectively into the broader healthcare system.

The Trimbos Institute, an independent mental health research center, will implement two pilot programs. The first focuses on increasing gambling education among youth through surveys, data monitoring, and stakeholder discussions with municipalities. The second program aims to improve employer support mechanisms for employees facing gambling-related issues.

Stichting Naast will create webinars, individual guidance sessions, and informative newsletters to support the families and close circles of problem gamblers. These resources will provide crucial information and assistance to those affected by gambling harm.

As the KSA prepares to address challenges like dwindling channelization rates and rising black market activity, these initiatives represent a proactive approach to tackling gambling-related harm in the Netherlands. The Addiction Prevention Fund continues to play a pivotal role in shaping a safer gambling environment for all Dutch citizens.
